I just brought home a puppy from the shelter and I can't
seem to get him to stop biting my hands and clothing.
I don't want to get rid of him, but I don't know what
to do. Is he just a born biter, or can he be trained to
stop?

 Never
fear - it is natural for young puppies to use their
teeth on everything. It does not necessarily denote an aggressive
temperment. However, just because it is natural does not
make biting acceptable behavior. Purchase a standard sport
whistle like the referees use, and hang it around your neck
at all times when you are with the puppy. When she bites
at your hand or clothing, blow the whistle and say "No!"
in a firm voice, remembering not to shout at her in anger.
Do what is called, "Three and a freebie," meaning, blow
the whistle every time the dog bites. However, on the fourth
time, do not blow the whistle and say "No!" -- if the dog
listens, then do not use the whistle unless the dog relapses.
Be consistent in this each time she bites, and you will
see a major improvement almost immediately. |
